Equestrian Organizations
Fairfax County has a variety of equestrian organizations, and we Fairfax4Horses welcomes opportunities to work with them and inform the community about their activities. Below is a partial list of county facilities and riding clubs
Frying Pan Park is a very popular park in western Fairfax County. Its equestrian facilities include a large indoor ring and also an outdoor ring. Equestrian events such as the Horse Expo held last April as well as horse shows are held at this site. The park also houses Kidwell Farm, a collection of farm animals that children enjoy observing.
Turner Farm is located in Great Falls, and is open for general riding. It has almost 40 acres of open fields and provides a novice-level, cross-country course, a round pen, and a large (200’ x 300’) multi-purpose outdoor arena with all-weather footing, stadium jumps and dressage markers.
The Clifton Horse Society (CHS) was established in 1977 to serve the needs of those interested in horses in Fairfax County and the surrounding communities. Club membership consists of horse owners and non-horse owners who want to see that horses continue to be a part of the future of this area of Virginia, as they have been in the past. Although based on Clifton, CHS has members throughout Virginia, in other states, and throughout the world. Its activities are recreational, educational, and social.
The Hunters Valley Riding Club (HVRC) is located in Oakton. Founded in the 1960s. It has a year-round program of riding activities for members which includes the use of two riding rings, jumps, trails, and a cross country course. HVRC maintains miles of local trails. One of the popular events is a Kids' Games Day, when childen run a little equestrian course (minus a horse). Pony rides are offered. Members also ride through the community at Christmas, caroling for neighbors.
The Virginia Region of the United States Pony Clubs consists of 8 local pony clubs and 3 riding Centers. The group has 250 membersi in locations from Arlington to Richmond and as far west as West Virginia. Members participate in all of the pony club disciplines, including : dressage, show jumping, and eventing, The United States Pony Clubs, Inc. organization develops character, leadership, confidence and a sense of community in youth through a program that teaches the care of horses and ponies, riding and mounted sports.
